EnviroAbility collects large volumes of aluminium and steel cans from across the County of Herefordshire. The cans are brought back to our processing yard in Ross-on-Wye, where an electro/mechanical can sorting machine separates them. Aluminium cans are then machine crushed, packed into special biscuits and transported to Newport for recycling. EnviroAbility volunteers are fully involved in all aspects of the can processing operations - handling, sorting and with supervision, operating the can processing machinery.
In addition to our kerbside collections of cans in the Ross-on-Wye area, we also collect cans from local schools and other groups. This scheme has expanded across Herefordshire, with schools as far away as Bromyard getting involved. A competition is held annually, to see which schools in Herefordshire can collect the most cans per pupil, with prizes awarded to schools that reach specific targets.
As well as providing practical environmental education opportunities to local schools, valuable work and training opportunities this project also contributes a valuable source of revenue to EnviroAbility.
